Facebook Events are the Way to Go October 19, 2010

I read an article recently by Alexandra Samuel about how Facebook events are the best way to advertise rather than groups of pages. Here’s why:

An invitation to an event seems friendlier than suggesting a page to become a fan of. Also, people are more likely to look at event rather than a fan page when first introduced to it.

An event is more likely to get in a news feed rather than something like a fan page, which means more advertisement.

Events are great for things like contests or promotions.

You should always start small when inviting people to an event however. If the response is positive, invite more people.

I definitely agree that Facebook events are the way to go when advertising something like a service or product….not just something that a person can physically attend. Events are received much more positively by most Facebook users rather than fan pages and you are likely to get a better response.

I don’t really agree with this article. I think Facebook events are effective, but they eventually expire. I think the best method is to start a group. Like when you start an event, you can message everyone in a group the same thing. But groups don’t have an end time, and unlike becoming a fan, groups send messages out to members rather than postin on its own page and assuming that people will come back just to look at the wall for updates.

I couldn’t agree with you more! I personally dont’ take time out of my day to look at pages or groups on Facebook. It is much easier to see what events are coming up than to search for groups or pages. I agree with you that events are more appropriate to send to people than pages or groups. I also like that Facebook keeps your upcoming events up-to-date so that you know what is coming up so that you don’t forget about the event. It also allows you to send messages to everyone that has accepted to attend the event.
