Oh Julianna, your posts always make me chuckle. I disagree with you about Pinterest not being here in years from now. I think it will, although I thought the same thing about Myspace back in the day too so who knows? Social media is constantly changing. I love Pinterest for looking at clothes but I’m not super crafty either so I don’t use it for that stuff or for cooking. I also like looking at the funny pictures too, espcially of little babies!

One of my favorite things about Pinterest is how different it is from every other social media site too. There’s always something new to look at and I’ve gotten a lot of great ideas for clothing, jewelry, and other uber girly things. The home decor and crafts are fun to look at even if I’ll never try them. I’ve been using Pinterest for a while and it can be addicting but I pride myself on not using it when I have too much to do. I think it’s great for PR since it’s so versatile and visual.

When I was introduced to Pinterest back in the summer, no one had heard of it. I was one of the first people I knew to start using the site, thanks to my ultra social media savvy cousin. When I first got an account, I just thought it was fun to use my spare time to look at clothes and jewelry that I wanted and occasionally see a funny meme or something. I saw the benefit for people using the site to plan their wedding, a vacation, or house renovations. There were also a ton of craft and cooking ideas that would be more appealing to others than myself. However, when I first started using the site, I never thought about its benefits from a public relations standpoint. Yet, now that so many people use the site and its uses have grown from more than just a website to plan your imaginary and so ridiculously expensive and unnattainable wedding, I can see the benefits.

A picture is worth a thousand words and so many people are visual, so advertising products and services on Pinterest is a great way to reach new clients reconnect with current ones on yet another social media website. Information and pins spread like wildfire on Pinterest and if something is popular, it can reach millions of people within hours. Also, since Pinterest is divided into categories, you can really reach your target audience and guarantee that the people who want to see your pins will see them because you can group them with similar items.

I certainly don’t think Pinterest is a fad. There’s always new items to look at. Even though sometimes I see pins a million times, I always see something new or I wouldn’t keep coming back. If you constantly stayed on the site, you might get bored after a while, but if it is something you do only in your spare time, you’ll never get bored with it.

Part of me loves recommending Pinterest to new people so they can get in on the craze. But another part of me really wishes it was still the tiny website that only a handful of people knew about like when I first got an account last July because it made it seem like I had such great ideas for crafts of outfits. Now everyone knows where those ideas came from!

Having your favorite Valentine’s Day gift be a call from your grandmother is so sweet! I agree that Valentine’s Day should be about celebrating your love for everyone you’re close to, not just a significant other. Having your company stand out for Valentine’s Day is important because there’s so much competition and I agree that you have to be ultra creative to stand out from the crowd.

I’ve always been pretty apathetic about Valentine’s Day, even last year when I had a special someone on this day. I’ve always felt that if you loved someone, you should let them know every single day of the year, not just when the calendar says February 14. On Valentine’s Day, I always just like to tell my friends and family how much I love them.

Some of the best gifts I’ve gotten for Valentine’s Day include candy and chocolate from my parents, who give me a present every year. I’ve also gotten little gifts from friends, and this year, I cooked dinner with friends and watched movies. When I was in elementary school, I loved Valentine’s Day because everyone got something and everyone got along for at least that day. I’ve never really received a so-called “bad gift” for Valentine’s Day. Since I never expect anything anyway, anyone giving me something as simple as a Valentine card makes me happy.

I’ve never really told anyone before that I didn’t like their gift. I’d never want to seem ungrateful. Especially on a holiday like Valentine’s Day, where if you’re single, gifts aren’t required, I’d just be happy to receive something at all.

If I worked in the Valentine’s Day industry, I would utilize social media to encourage potential customers to buy my product. Talking up Valentine’s Day on Facebook and Twitter or giving tips on how to make this Valentine’s Day extra special (by buying my product of course!), would be tactics that I would use.

I agree with you! I love social media. I cannot even imagine what my life would be like without Facebook and Twitter to keep me constantly updated on what my friends, companies and favorite celebrities are up to at any given moment. It’s definitely changed the way I look at the world. I also agree that someone with public relations experience needs to be handling the social media for a company since it needs to be done proefssionally and it’s not something that just anyone could be able to do.
I agree that those not properly trained in public relations would have a hard time working in social media, especially when a crisis arises. I also agree that social media cannot replace the personal feeling of dealing with your publics face-to-face and that social media can make us lose the human feel of working with people.

Social media has changed public relations in so many ways. For one, a public relations professional no longer just writes press releases and hopes they are put in the newspaper. We have direct contact with our audience by way of Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and even Pinterest! Being able to use those social media sites and knowing that our audience is already there sure does make things simpler but it’s not always a good thing. Managing a Twitter feed for a company and keeping up with a Facebook page seems easy enough. I mean we all have a Facebook and Twitter account and know how to use them. Yet, updating your own Facebook status and tweeting about your own life are a lot easier than having to do the same for a company. I’m helping to create the Twitter account for my internship site, as well as updating their Facebook page and it’s a lot of work! Coming up with topics to discuss that will engage your publics is not as easy as trying to engage your friends on your own personal social media accounts.

Having a background in public relations is essential to using social media for a company. Those people are trained to know what to say, how to engage in conversation with customers, and how to handle a crisis and deal with complaints and compliments in a professional manner. It’s not just a job for anyone and those attempting to handle social media without the proper knowledge could get overwhelmed by it. If a customer makes a rude comment on Facebook, someone without the PR knowledge might handle the situation poorly and not only lose that person as a customer but anyone else who visited the page and saw the interaction. Not having a clear understanding of social media and how it benefits you can end up hurting the company in the long run. It’s best just to go with a PR person to handle the social media.

In today’s social media craze, not choosing to engage in customers that way is the worst thing to do. A company not having a Facebook or Twitter may seem out of touch and detract customers.

I agree with you about the Harry Potter books. They’re awesome and I wish I could convince every person I know to give them a chance! I pretty much always will see the movie if I’ve read the book. There also occasionally times where I’ll read the book after seeing the movie, which is what I’m doing right now with The Help.

First, I would like to thank you for that incredible image of Brad Pitt that is now stuck in my head. I agree with you that sometimes the movie can distort an image of a character or a storyline from what I imagined in my head. Also, I loved The Great Gatsby, book and movie, as well as The Kite Runner. And one of my best friends is obssessed wtih The Road. I think I’m going to put it on my list of books to read as well!

I’m an avid reader and I typically am very protective of the characters in a story and always feel like the movie versions of books I love never do it justice. For the most part, I try to read the book before I see the movie but sometimes, that isn’t always the case. There have been several books I’ve read because I loved the movie and wanted to compare. Three that come to mind in this case are Atonement by Ian McEwan, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, and The Help by Kathryn Stockett, which I’m currently reading. I loved the books better for both Atonement and Gone with the Wind.

Most of the time I try to read the book first, like the Harry Potter Series or The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy. The movie for The Prince of Tides is terrible, by the way. It completely deviates from the book. I always find that the books are better than the movies. I feel that movies leave out important plot points, or don’t develop some characters enough and that reading the books would give the audience a better understanding of the story. In high school, we always watched the movie version of a book after we were done reading it for the class, and I always found the books to be better than the movies.

I always try to read the books and watch the movies, particularly if it’s a story I really like. However, I’ve never found an instance where I thought the movie was better than the book. When I read a book, I can picture the character in my head and when I see a screen adaptation, it’s always different than what I have imagined for the story.

My favorite book to movie adaptations are The Harry Potter series, particularly the two films for the last book, Gone with the Wind, and the 2006 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

As a college senior with graduating looming in the near future, I realize that my life is ahead of me and that I should do my best to make the next few years of my life count. Therefore, a bucket list of things to do is necessary. I have many things I’d love to do in my lifetime but these are the ones I feel are the most important.

1. Travel around the world. Ideally, I’d love to visit every continent. Some countries I’d particularly like to visit are England and France. I’m a total Anglophile and I studied French in high school and I love the French culture. I’d also love to visit Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, and Japan.

2. Run a race for charity. As the child of a breast cancer survivor, I’ve always wanted to do the Susan G. Komen 3-day event, particularly with my mom. I feel it would be something special for us to share together.

3. Skydive. I’m not afraid of heights at all and I would love to do something like this!

4. Visit all 50 states. I’ve visited 17 so I’m definitely making progress.

5. Go on a road trip across America, either up the coast of Interstate 95 or across the country to California. I love a good road trip and what better way to see America than by car.

6. Read every book on my “books to read” list. It’s a long list so it’ll take years to get there but I love to read so I think I can do it!
